Water Heating

Provided By:

Water heating accounts for up to 24 percent of residential energy use and is the second-largest energy expenditure in most households. Using high-efficiency tankless models could save 290 million gallons of fuel oil a year, 164 million gallons of propane and 6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Typically the size of a small suitcase, a tankless water heater heats water only when it is needed, rather than heating it and storing it in a tank for future use. Because of its size, it also can be placed close to the point of use "such as a bathroom faucet or shower" so hot water reaches the outlet quickly. As a result, there's no need to let water run until it reaches a desired temperature, which wastes up to 7 gallons of water a day, according to Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing.

Field evaluations have shown that energy usage can be decreased by 10 to 20 percent, compared to a conventional water heater, says Dana Bres of PATH. This savings would be most dramatic where the hot water is used during short periods each day.
