The Costs of Building Green

Provided By:

Some homeowners shy away from greenbuilding because they believe the initial costs are beyond their budgets. But according to a recent report, going green might be more affordable than they think.

Air Quality Sciences (AQS), an indoor air-testing and consulting company based in Marietta, Ga., found that if greenbuilding goals are incorporated as early as possible into a home-design process, costs are only 0 to 3 percent higher than conventional building, as opposed to 10 percent to 25 percent higher, as previously thought.

Clearly, greenbuilding is affordable, says AQS president Anthony G. Worthan. The economic outlook gets even better if improvements in people's comfort and productivity are taken into account.

The report also found the following:

∗ Commissioning, a testing and inspection process that ensures project goals are completed at all steps of building, can result in energy savings of up to 10 percent while adding only 0.3 to 4 percent to building costs.

∗ Flushing out a building with 100 percent outdoor air prior to occupancy is an effective way to remove indoor air contaminants such as formaldehyde, fungi and volatile organic compounds.

The report, titled If You Build It Green, They Will Come, is available free of charge; visit http://www.aerias.org (registration is required under Premium Content) or call 800-789-0419.
