Structural Stone Claymont DE

Dry-stacking fieldstone is a difficult method of building with stone. When done properly, the results are worth the extra effort. Built in the late 1700s, the stately, Colonial-style home is a handsome part of the historic streetscape for drivers passing through the village area of Yarmouth, Maine. But walking around the side of the house reveals a disturbing view from modern times in Claymont.

Structural Stone

Dry-stacking fieldstone is a difficult method of building with stone. When done properly, the results are worth the extra effort.

Built in the late 1700s, the stately, Colonial-style home is a handsome part of the historic streetscape for drivers passing through the village area of Yarmouth, Maine. But walking around the side of the house reveals a disturbing view from modern times: The corner board is peeled back from the house, uncovering a rotting sill and loose clapboards. A siding problem? Not initially. When George Libby got on the scene, he saw a roof with no gutters and foundation backfill that was sloping toward the house. Over time, rain water cascading over the eaves had seeped underground and undermined the fieldstone foundation. Now the granite slabs that had supported the back corner of the house for more than 200 years were leaning out, slowly bringing the wood framing with them. Libby, an expert mason with G.M.
