As green building grows in popularity, more and more books are addressing the subject, creating a burgeoning subgenre of works within the larger category of homebuilding publications. Two new green-related books in particular caught our attention, including one by David Johnston, a green building advocate, contributor to Smart HomeOwner and member of this magazine’s editorial advisory board.

Working with freelance writer Scott Gibson (who also has written for this magazine), Johnston has created a comprehensive reference book titled Green from the Ground Up. Focusing on “sustainable, healthy and energy-efficient home construction,” and profusely illustrated with 300 photographs and 60 illustrations, the book begins by addressing green building basics and examining the whole house as a system. It then deconstructs the green home, zeroing in on such areas as foundations, framing, roofs and attics, windows and doors, plumbing, heating and cooling, insulation, siding and decking, and interior finishes. Chapters are also devoted to solar energy, indoor air quality, and landscaping and decks.

Throughout the book, numerous sidebars, pullouts and case studies dig into the nitty-gritty of green building. In addition, an afterword discusses zero-energy homes and the need to build with an eye toward the future. In all, the book is a colorful and highly useful resource. (The Taunton Press; $24.95.)

Another green building expert, Jerry Yudelson of Yudelson Associates, a green building consultancy based in Tucson, Ariz., enters the field with Green Building A to Z, a resource geared toward homeowners and builders who are new to the green movement.

Yudelson begins by putting the concept of green building in a global context and discussing the history of the movement before getting into the details. The second part of the book is arranged alphabetically (as the book’s title indicates), and covers everything from architecture, biodiesel and daylighting to green roofs, passive solar design, xeriscaping and zero-net-energy buildings. The result is an informative and easy-to-follow introduction to all aspects of green building. (New Society Publishers; $16.95.)
