Don't panic. It's not the War of the Worlds. This is a peaceful invasion. According to a recent study by the United Nations Economic Commission, the number of robots in the home" classified as domestic or service robots -- is expected to grow substantially in the coming years. Initially they'll do simple chores, like vacuuming, mowing the yard and cleaning windows, but models soon will be introduced that will watch the kids, guard the house, and assist the elderly and the handicapped. It even recharges itself and turns off automatically when its finished. Price: $1,800;

Roomba Discovery SE. The newest robotic floor vac from iRobot has built-in intelligence that guides it to a docking station when it needs to recharge, a stasis sensor that detects when it's stuck and initiates an escape routine, and cleaning intelligence that determines how long it will take to clean a room. Price: $280;

RC3000 Robotic Cleaner.

The sensor-steered RC3000, from German manufacturer Karcher, runs four cleaning programs with different driving strategies, depending on the area being cleaned. It can extract itself from tight spaces or corners, detect areas that require extra cleaning and automatically return to its docking station when finished or to be recharged. Samsung includes all the standard features, such as auto-charging and sensor maneuvering, on its upscale (and pricey) model, but kicks the capabilities up a notch by enabling you to control the unit via the Web, so you can move it around the house using a computer keyboard. There's even an onboard Web cam, so you can use it as a surveillance device when you're traveling or on vacation.

And its air purifying system helps freshen indoor air. It's currently available only in Europe, but don't worry -- it won't be long before it invades our shores. Price: $3,000.
