Innovative solutions for creating healthy, efficient, eco-friendly homes

Power Shades Fargo ND

In the winter, the warm air in your home is drawn toward the cold glass of your windows, which results in heat loss. Any window treatment, such as shades, blinds or curtains, helps to prevent that heat loss, but specially designed coverings, such as Duette honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas, can increase the energy value of a window by 25 to 175 percent.

Power Shades

There are all sorts of ways to improve your home's energy efficiency this winter, but one relatively simple solution is to add insulating window coverings.

Developed in 1985 in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s, the pleated fabric shades are sewn together to create small honeycombs that run vertically. The honeycombs capture air to provide an insulating property. Shades are available with single-, double- or triple-honeycomb construction, with R-values reaching as high as 4.8 for triple-honeycomb shades (when closed over double-glazed glass).

Duette shades also provide noise control. The honeycomb construction has high sound-absorption ratings, with several fabric styles absorbing up to 65 percent of reflected sound, making for a quiet home. And with four opacity options, from sheer to opaque, the shades can provide varying levels of protection from the suns ultraviolet rays.

Duette shades are available in four pleat sizes, from 3/4-inch to 1-1/4-inch, and in hundreds of colors. Prices start at about $155. For more information: http://www.hunterdouglas.com or 800-789-0331.
