Pollution-Free Lawn Tools
It’s that time of year again — yard work. Spring cleanup. Time to fire up the mowers and edgers and hedge trimmers. But in many cases, as you’re tidying up your yard, you’ll also be polluting the air around your home with that gas-powered lawn maintenance equipment.
The reason? Those pesky emissions. According to the EPA, standard lawn maintenance equipment such as gas-powered mowers, chains saws and leaf vacuums emit high levels of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and produce as much as 11 times the air pollution of a new car for each hour of operation. In fact, the EPA estimates that gas-powered lawn equipment produces 5 percent of the smog that forms in some suburban and urban areas.
One option is electric-powered equipment. Black & Decker, for instance, sells a full line of electric-powered lawn tools, including cordless mowers, trimmers, edgers and chain saws. Many are powered by an 18-volt lightweight rechargeable battery that is designed to be? interchangeable between various types of equipment, enabling cordless use.
Neuton also makes a battery-powered lawn mower, which operates on a rechargeable 24-volt battery and runs for about an hour on a single charge (it takes about 12 hours to recharge the battery). The mower is made of lightweight materials and is designed for quiet operation with minimal maintenance. Priced from about $350.
