Platinum Green Home

Provided By:

As you’ve paged through this Great Homes issue of Smart HomeOwner, you’ve probably seen the word platinum used a lot. No fewer than four of the homes we’ve spotlighted in the preceding pages are certified at the Platinum level — the highest achievable — under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green rating system. The Global Green 21st Century Shotgun home in New Orleans, Burnside’s Inn in Michigan and the Alley House in Seattle are all Platinum-certified new homes. And the Live Green, Live Smart Sustainable House in Minneapolis is the first remodeling project in the country to achieve Platinum-level certification.

Given the fact that only 44 homes in the country are currently certified at the Platinum level, we figure we have the highest concentration of “extreme” green homes featured in any magazine published so far. This time last year, there were fewer than 10 Platinum level homes in existence, which means that when it comes to designing and constructing modern homes, more and more builders, architects and homeowners are going for Platinum (as well as Gold and Silver) certification. Around the country, new Platinum-level homes include:

• a condo in Oklahoma, part of the Tulsa Loft Project, featuring geothermal heating and cooling, a green roof and countertops made from recycled paper
• the 5ive home, which was the first in Minnesota to achieve Platinum certification, thanks to its SIP (structural insulated panel) construction and careful use of building materials to ensure a healthy indoor environment
• a Panama City, Fla., home with solar panels, spray-foam insulation, bamboo flooring and a geothermal system
• a townhome at the Villages at Cascade Head, a coastal resort community in Oregon, constructed with ICFs (insulated concrete forms) and featuring high-efficiency doors and windows as well as a stormwater reclamation system
• four detached single-family homes at an affordable housing project on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts
• Vista Dunes in La Quinta, Calif., the largest multi-family affordable housing project in the country to achieve Platinum certification.

These are just a few of an increasing number of homes that are pushing the green and energy-efficiency envelope to the highest levels, thanks to smart building practices and the latest green building materials. They are the forerunners of a building trend sure to expand in the months and years ahead. For more information on LEED certified homes, visit the U.S. Green Building Council’s website at www.usgbc.org or call 800-795-1747.
