Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

They all refer to a condition in which symptoms appear after someone has been exposed to any of a wide range of chemicals, whether it's from a chemical spill or from being in a house or office with poor circulation, according to the website WebMD Health ( http://www.webmdhealth.com ).

Many medical groups, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, do not consider MCS a distinct physical disorder because of the lack of clinical evidence.

And people with MCS don't develop antibodies in response to the chemical exposure like an allergic reaction. WebMD says those affected with MCS tend to have higher rates of mental health disorders" like depression and anxiety, and somatoform disorders that bring about physical symptoms.

Because about half the people with MCS meet the criteria for depression or anxiety disorders, the experts don't agree on whether physical or psychological factors prompt the MCS symptoms.

Symptoms of MCS include headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, irritability, confusion, earache, chest pain, skin rash, itching and sneezing, among many others.

Because there aren't any tests to diagnose MCS, doctors typically rule out other allergies and disorders and consider the person's medical history and symptoms. Treatment varies, and it is not known if the disorder can be prevented.
