Life Expectancy of Home Appliances
There's a strange buzz coming out of your refrigerator, the dishwasher doesn't get plates clean like it used to and the microwave can barely heat water. Should you call the repairman, or is it time to retire your old appliances and purchase new ones? Guidelines created by The HomeTeam Inspection Service, a nationwide home inspection company based in Milford, Ohio, can help answer the question, "How long will it last?"
Keep in mind the following life expectancies for home appliances and other home products and systems are estimates and can fluctuate depending on environmental conditions as well as the normal wear and tear they must endure.
∗ Dishwashers and microwaves usually last about a decade, while refrigerators and electric and gas ranges last longer, anywhere from 17 to 19 years.
∗ Washers and dryers have life expectancies of 13 to 14 years.
∗ Gas and electric water heaters will usually keep you warm for 11 to 13 years.
∗ A central air conditioner will cool you down for about 15 years.
∗ Ceramic tile or laminated countertops will last 10 to 15 years, as will fiberglass or cast iron bathtubs.
∗ Outside the home, your roof will last anywhere from 15 to 100 years, depending on the type of material and the weather conditions. Asphalt shingles, for example, will last 15 to 30 years, while slate can be effective for up to 100 years. Gutters have a life expectancy of about 30 years.
∗ Vinyl siding can last 50 years with minimal maintenance.
