Energy Efficient House Design Pahrump NV

Linda Moody's take on a typical New England Saltbox is a two-story, passive-solar space with 90 square feet of south-facing windows and a crushed stone/bluestone floor that serves as thermal mass, absorbing and storing the sun's heat during the day, then dispersing it at night.

Shaping the Seasons

Architect: Linda Moody

Living area: 2,226

Bedrooms/bathrooms: 2/2

Cost of blueprints: $725

Linda Moody's take on a typical New England Saltbox is a two-story, passive-solar space with 90 square feet of south-facing windows and a crushed stone/bluestone floor that serves as thermal mass, absorbing and storing the sun's heat during the day, then dispersing it at night. Other features include a two-story passive-solar garden room, two-foot roof overhangs to provide summer shade and operable skylights to aid in passive cooling.

Wild Rice

Architect: Dale Mulfinger

Living area: 1,576

Bedrooms/bathrooms: 3/2

Cost of blueprints: $585

Displaying one of the hallmarks of a healthy house, the Wild Rice's garage is separated from the main living area by a breezeway, which helps ensure good indoor air quality. The focal point of the interior is a massive stone fireplace in the spacious central great room. Other features include a sun room and a "couple's realm

on the second floor, as well as an optional lower level that includes a fourth bedroom, laundry area, workroom and rumpus room.

Prairie House

Architect: Sarah Susanka

Living area: 3,062 sq. ft.

Bedrooms/bathrooms: 4/3

Cost of blueprints: $1,995

Featured in The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live, the Prairie House draws its design elements from the Prairie School of architecture popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright. A wide, low-pitched roof, generous overhangs and windows banded together in groups are some of the home's design elements. Two large decks as well as large windows enhance day lighting, and natural materials are specified for use both inside and out.

Juneau

Architect: Bruce Wydeven

Living area: 2,543 sq. ft.

Bedrooms/bathrooms: 4/2.5

Cost of blueprints: $1,005

Originally designed for a corner lot in an urban development, the Juneau home's efficient design maximizes living area with a minimal footprint. The first floor includes a foyer, mudroom and open-style living room, dining room and kitchen, as well as an "away" room that can be used as a library, den or media room. A laundry room on the second floor is located near the bedrooms, eliminating the need to carry laundry baskets up and down stairs.
