Like wildflowers in the spring, green homes are popping up all over the country. Here are just a few of the recent or current greenbuilding projects that showcase environmentally friendly building practices.

· Gulfstream Homes, a Naples, Fla.-based builder of custom and estate homes, incorporates green and energy-efficient features into every home it builds. Standard features include 100 percent recycled drywall, paints and carpets low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), programmable thermostats, insulated hot-water pipes, and energy-efficient water heaters and appliances. All homes are certified green by the Florida Green Building Coalition.

· The Built Green Idea Home, completed last year in Issaquah Highlands near Seattle, was designed as a demonstration home to showcase a number of greenbuilding and healthy home features, including blown-in cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper, a whole-house ventilation system, Energy Star lighting fixtures and lamps, and a rainwater collection system that irrigates the gardens. http://www.issaquahhighlands.com/ideahome

· Drawing his inspiration from green plants, which use the sun's energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water, mechanical engineer and homeowner Brian Beaulieu has just completed construction of his hydrogen-powered home in Scottsdale, Ariz. It's the only home of its kind in the country and one of only two in the world (the other is in Malaysia). The sustainable desert home is equipped with photovoltaic panels that electrolyze water, which produces hydrogen to heat water, power electric generators and fuel cars. Beaulieu also specified local building materials, such as limestone (for the floors) and clay and cinderblock (for the walls and ceiling), in the home's construction.
