A Sure Showstopper

Provided By:

The problem is that comfort has almost nothing to do with how big a space is. It is attained, rather, by tailoring our houses to fit the way we really live, and to the scale and proportion of the human form.

Statements like that have made architect Sarah Susanka the leader of the Not So Big homebuilding movement that has gained national attention and is changing the way we design and build homes. Susanka's books have sold millions of copies, and she has appeared on numerous TV shows. Now she's applying her expertise to a new project, the Not So Big Showhouse 2005, which will debut January 13"16 in Orlando, Fla., as part of the International Builders Show. The home then will be open to the public throughout the year.

Working with building science consultant Steve Easley and Ron Jones, aka the Green Builder, Susanka has designed a home that emphasizes high-quality, energy-efficient construction while balancing space, light and order" a concept important in all of Susanka's work. Her goal is to spotlight smart building practices while creating homes that fit the scale and budget of any homeowner.

A quick rundown of some of the home's specifics demonstrates those smart building practices. The metal roof by Englert Inc. features an Ultra-Cool energy-saving color that is Energy Star "approved. The foundation was created using Amvic's FormLock ICF (insulating concrete form) building system. The home is heated and cooled by a two-stage heat-pump system from Trane. A tankless water heater from Bosch provides hot water. And a long deck behind the house is constructed of composite decking from CorrectDeck.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. New technologies and systems will be on display throughout the house, which visitors will learn about via hosted-audio and multiple-media tours. For more information, visit http://www.notsobigshowhouse.com .
