Top 10 Green Building Products

BuildingGreen Inc. ( http://www.buildinggreen.com ), the publisher of Environmental Building News and the GreenSpec product directory recently announced its top 10 new green building products. EBN's editors, using criteria developed over the last 12 years, selected these top products from among the 1,750-plus listings in the directory.

Material selection is a key aspect of green building, says Alex Wilson, executive editor. Our product selections this year show off some of the tremendous innovation we're seeing in the building products industry.

Some of the products are used primarily in commercial buildings and some in residential, but all are earth-friendly in important ways. Manufacturers in the directory do not pay to be listed, nor do any of BuildingGreen's publications accept advertising.

American Pride

latex paint

What makes it green

Rapidly renewable products, releases minimal pollutants

This paint contains latex that uses acrylated castor oil as a building block. While some oil-based paints are derived from biobased materials, such as linseed oil, this is the first latex paint to use biobased materials in this novel manner. With no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and virtually no smell, interiors can be painted while occupied. The paints are currently for sale at individual dealers in Mississippi and by special order in other parts of the country.

MemBrain

smart vapor retarder

What makes it green

Blocks introduction and spread of pollutants

This transparent vapor retarder is made from a polyamide (nylon-6) film that changes permeability according to relative humidity. At less than one perm at 20 percent humidity, the film protects against interior condensation during winter in a cold climate. During summer months, the film goes up to more than 20 perms at 95 percent relative humidity, allowing the building envelope to dry. This product is not intended for warmer climates or in spaces with high constant relative humidity (indoor pools or spas), and interior finishes and insulations must also be highly permeable (unfaced fiberglass and vapor-permeable paints).
