Gardening in a Drought
When a man who invented the process that enables peanut butter to spread smoothly decided to invent something to alleviate water scarcity, people around him probably wondered what in the world he would come up with. Well, he came up with something called DriWater.
In 1987, former Skippy Peanut Butter Company food chemist Lee Avera developed a product that would soon be used commercially in agriculture, landscaping, erosion control, highway revegetation, reforestation and mine reclamation around the world. Now you can use it in and around your home to keep your own vegetation from getting parched during dry times. Using a now-patented process of mixing 98 percent purified water with 2 percent food-grade ingredients - which form a vegetable-gum binding agent - Avera came up with a way to package water in a gel form.
When the gel is placed in contact with the soil, naturally occurring enzymes in the soil convert the gel back to a liquid at a consistent rate. DriWater Inc. of Santa Rosa, Calif., claims that the vegetable gum also nourishes those soil enzymes, which will then be able to more effectively break down soil nutrients for more effective root uptake. With virtually no evaporation during this process, the capillary action of the soil is able to form a moisture pocket around the root zone for more efficient and lasting watering. One gel tube can provide up to 90 days of irrigation.
Available in large department stores, nurseries and garden centers nationwide. www.DriWater.com
