A new energy appliance for the home can serve as a renewable energy management system, provide protection from power outages and reduce energy costs by 10 to 15 percent. Called GridPoint Connect, the appliance, which resembles a small stainless-steel refrigerator, has been described as a hybrid for the home for a TiVo for energy by the company's president and CEO, Peter Corsell.

GridPoint Connect's primary purpose is to serve as an energy management system for homeowners with a renewable energy source, such as a solar-panel, small-scale-wind or fuel-cell installation. Installed near the main interior electrical panel, it is designed to receive, convert, store and distribute energy from the renewable source to the home.

If excess power is generated, it is sold back to the utility company. If you need to purchase energy from the grid, GridPoint will do so during off-peak hours, when costs are lower. It also stores a day's worth of power in its batteries, so it can keep your home operating if there's an interruption from any energy source.

A second appliance, GridPoint Protect, is an intelligent battery-power backup system for homes that receive energy from traditional grid sources. Both appliances, which are priced from $6,000 to $16,000, are eligible for the new federal tax credit, which can be used to cover up to 30 percent of the cost, with a limit of $2,000.
