Thanks to a new website, it’s much easier for homeowners to locate and purchase eco-friendly kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, a nonprofit trade association based in Reston, Va., launched the GreenCabinetSource.org website in February as a way to spotlight its Environmental Stewardship Program and help homeowners identify cabinets and cabinet manufacturers who are committed to protecting the environment.

The two-year-old Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) is a certification system designed specifically for kitchen and bath cabinets, and rates cabinet manufacturers and their products in five categories: air quality, product resource management, process resource management, environmental stewardship and community relations.

For instance, to receive ESP certification, cabinets must be made from low-formaldehyde-emitting wood products (to ensure good indoor air quality once installed) and must use wood from a recognized sustainable forestry program. In addition, the manufacturer must recycle waste from the manufacturing process, must implement an energy conservation program in its manufacturing facility and must be involved with community activities or charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity.

So far, nearly 90 cabinet manufacturers have been certified by ESP, and offer eco-friendly choices in kitchen and bath cabinetry. Cabinets certified under the program carry the ESP seal and are available across the country. For more information on ESP, to view a list of certified manufacturers or to find out how to get ESP cabinets, visit the website at www.greencabinetsource.org or call 703-264-1690.
