Boost Your Home's Wildfire Defense

Provided By:

This year's wildfire season, which lasts through August, is expected to be more active than usual due to drought conditions and higher-than-normal summer temperatures, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Homes in the Southwest, Southeast (including all of Florida), northern Rockies, Northeast and Alaska are particularly at risk.

Homeowners can improve their homes' defenses against wildfire and reduce the risk of damage by following 10 tips provided by the Institute for Business & Home Safety. These actions should be taken within 30 feet of most homes, or 50 to 100 feet if the home is located close to a wooded area.

1. Eliminate fuel sources like dry landscaping and woodpiles.

2. Prune trees and shrubs.

3. Trim taller trees so the lowest branch is no less than six feet from the ground.

4. Remove dead leaves and branches from the yard.

5. Clear branches from around the roof and chimney.

6. Mow the lawn regularly and dispose promptly of cuttings and debris.

7. Clear the roof, gutters and eaves of debris.

8. Maintain your irrigation system.

9. Move firewood and storage tanks 50 feet away from the home.

10. Store flammable liquids properly.
