Benefits of IceStone

Provided By:

In the March/April 2007 issue, in the article titled "Best Bets for Kitchens and Baths," we erroneously reported that IceStone, a durable surface material designed for use as countertops, backsplashes, tabletops, and interior walls and flooring, was made with resins, among other materials. In fact, IceStone contains no resins or petroleum-based materials, and is made only with 100-percent recycled glass and concrete.

This is a critical point, since it means that IceStone surfaces contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can off-gas and affect indoor air quality. In addition, this lack of resins was an important contributing factor in the certification of IceStone as an environmentally safe and healthy material by Cradle to Cradle, a program designed to highlight sustainable building products.

IceStone provides a number of other environmental benefits as well, since it diverts hundreds of tons of glass from landfills each year, and operates out of a renovated, day-lit factory in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Of course, IceStone's biggest benefit to homeowners is that it's an attractive and durable material that's as strong as granite, not as porous as marble and as heat-resistant as stone. It's currently available in 24 colors, although it can be created in just about any color by adding pigment to the background mix.
