American Clay

Provided By:

It's plaster with a twist, and it's creating a buzz among green-oriented builders and homeowners. American Clay is an environmentally friendly earth plaster made from 100 percent natural ingredients, including clays, aggregates like marble dust, and natural pigments. Designed for use in everything from contemporary-style homes to historic renovations, it resists mold, absorbs sound, won't fade and is relatively easy to apply.

Because this plaster uses clay as an ingredient, it absorbs and releases moisture naturally, so it helps regulate humidity -- which makes it especially useful for bathroom walls.

Developed by New Mexico "based Croft Elsaesser, who experimented over a two-year period to create a nontoxic natural finish material for homes, American Clay is an alternative to cement, gypsum, acrylic and lime plasters. It can be applied to stucco, drywall, wallpaper and adobe walls; a primer or prep material is sometimes required. Application is not recommended on oriented strand board (OSB), tongue-and-groove paneling and other materials prone to expansion and contraction.

The texture of American Clay can be customized to be smooth like Venetian plaster or rough like adobe. It's available in 32 hues and comes in 50-pound bags or buckets, which cover about 100 square feet (textured-finish Loma, priced at about $60) to about 300 square feet (smooth-finish Porcelina, about $100). http://www.americanclay.com "> http://www.americanclay.com
